Federal Premium Names David ‘Doc’ Frederickson Honorary Historian and Captures His Amazing Story with a Short Film

Since the company’s founding in 1922, Federal Premium has revolutionized the science of ammunition production, and Frederickson has captured nearly all of the company’s landmark achievements with a collection of memorabilia spanning this rich history.
Federal Premium presented Frederickson with the honorary historian title and a commemorative trophy on April 10 at the 2015 NRA Annual Meetings and Exhibits show in Nashville, Tennessee.

At an early age, Frederickson was an aspiring collector of firecrackers, BB guns and medicine bottles. As he grew, his father introduced him to the outdoors and shooting sports, and his collection began reflecting this newfound passion.
“When my dad and I would go hunting, I would pick up all of the spent shell casings I could find, paying close attention to the older objects—items I felt had a sense of history. It was during this time that I became fascinated with the Federal brand and its story,” said Frederickson.
In 1972, he met with Federal founder, Charles Horn, and received permission to document the company’s historical information and packaging. In the following decades, Frederickson accumulated rooms full of ammunition packaging, advertising and records, and he wrote books chronicling these historical assets. But it wasn’t the products and packaging, or the books he published that he remembers most fondly.
“Most of my memories are of those early visits to the company headquarters, all of the amazing people I’ve met over the years, and how supportive they have been to me in helping foster my collection,” he explained.
Today, Frederickson is a staple at the organization as he continues to capture the history of the company.
“Doc isn’t just our historian—he’s a fixture of our heritage, part of the culture and a member of the Federal Premium family,” remarked Duane Lowe, Director of Operations for Federal Premium Ammunition. “We’re thrilled he is now the honorary company historian.”
Frederickson has been collecting Federal Premium memorabilia for 55 years and continues to add to his collection as Federal Premium introduces more new products that set the industry standard. He has even authored several books on the topic.
“My ultimate goal is to keep the collection intact and make it something that can be used by everybody to remember the history of Federal,” expressed Frederickson. “It’s something I’m extremely proud of.”
